Project Statement

For this Globalization 4th quarter benchmark, I decided to do research about Mustafa Kamal Pasha who was a Turkish nationalist leader and founder and first president of the republic of Turkey which is called modern Turkey. He was given the title of Ataturk (father of nation) because of his nationalist revolution in Anatolia to abolish Ottoman Sultanate. He made many reforms for the country to make it a strong and powerful country in the world and he succeeded in doing so. There were some negative parts of his reforms as well which include “putting aside of Islam”. Turkey is a muslim country with 99.8% muslims and 0.2% Christians and Jewish. MK Ataturk encouraged western clothing for men and women and discouraged veiling of women. He declared it a secular state, constitutional provision establishing Islam as official religion deleted. He also changed the ottoman to Turkish (modified Latin). But now their current government Tayyip Erodgan (The Justice and Development Party) with the support of Turkish people, is trying to bring Islam back in Turkey.

“ As elsewhere in the Muslim world, many of these young people were looking for the way, for the "pure" Islam that would redeem their honor and their value in a secularizing state that disparaged them.”

He sent municipality men up and down sidewalks at Istanbul’s restaurants to pick up tables and chairs in the month of Ramadan. He has allowed veiling of women and has been building  new mosques because after Ataturk’s reforms, the mosques were converted to museums. During Tayyip Erodgan’s government, there has been unprecendented economic growth, constitutional reforms and re-emergance as a major global power. And also they are trying to return back from westernization to islamisation to become a power in muslim world. I would say that reforms can help in bring Islam back in Turkey because it is a muslim country although it is run by a state and not religion but the history of shows that Islam was in power in Turkey during entire history.

Turkey has always been globally geographical significant especially when it provides link from the West to the East. It has remained a close ally of the United States especially when U.S used Turkey to send troops to attack Iraq.
